UP THE MANE &
DOWN THE REIN
I'll just mention one pivotal thing I learned from a clinic session called simply "Horsemanship", and that is a technique Wylene refers to as "up the mane & down the rein." This and several other tips - all of which are designed to shorten the horse's response time, build his confidence and thus make him (and you!) safer - helped me feel more secure even though I wasn't even on my horse!
LAYING DOWN A HORSE
One key element of Wylene's "ways" - and it can be hugely beneficial, truly a gift - is her (masterful, IMHO) method of "laying down" a horse. I was initially under the mistaken impression that this was just for "troubled" horses. Boy, did I learn otherwise, In fact, it teach a horse patience respect and trust. What horse out there does not need these things? The process also addresses other, "deeper" issues.
Stand Up
Up the mane with left hand to cue your horse to stop.
Bring your right leg around behind you and over your horse.
Prepare yourself to dismount and bring your left foot out of the stirrup.
Your right foot steps to the ground.
Step forward with your left foot.
WYLENE'S TRICK
COWGIRL STEP-OFF
BEFORE attempting this, you and your horse MUST know the "Touch to the Mane" technique. DO NOT ATTEMPT this without having this maneuver down perfect and determine that you are athletic enough to also perform this. You can start at the trot then move up into a canter then gallop!
